Town Crier for Caledon

Business Functions

Nothing launches a conference, business opening, or important gathering quite like a well-crafted formal proclamation from a town crier.  It immediately captures people's attention, gathers them together, and conveys that this is something special!

It's also a clever publicity decision:  The colour and pageantry added by a town crier makes for a great photo opportunity, and can move an otherwise hum-drum ribbon-cutting ceremony on to the front page!

As with all of my services, the primary value-add is the skill and attention paid to the crafting of the proclamation itself, fully customized to convey the precise message and character that you need - a cry that will exceed your expectations.

Special Pandemic Lockdown Proclamations

Under emergency measures enacted to deal with the CoViD-19 pandemic, many people are unable to stage the kind of social gathering that a major birthday or other significant event deserves.  Some have resorted to street parades and other physically-distanced celebrations.

For a limited time, I am offering curbside proclamations to honour these events at no charge.  To keep up with demand, I use a special event template that can be modified to suit the occasion - usually with a personalized rhyming couplet to salute the person(s) being recognized.

NOTE: Current social distancing, mask, and attendance limit regulations MUST be followed.  Otherwise no proclamation will be delivered.

Bookings are being confirmed no more than two weeks in advance, since we don't know exactly when all of these social restrictions will be lifted.  (On the other hand, if you want a fully customized proclamation, or a locked-in date to make your special celebration awesome, I am continuing to book private functions, modified to comply with lockdown protocols.)

PROCLAMATION FEE RANGE:    FREE!  (travel and other services may be additional)  Donations accepted.

Private Functions

Engaging a professional council-appointed town crier will add an awesome and classy touch to your wedding, major birthday or anniversary celebration, or any other special gathering of people.  I am an award-winning crier, primarily because of the quality of the proclamations that I create, and the power and entertainment underscoring their delivery.

The skill and attention paid to the crafting of the proclamation itself, fully customized to convey the precise message and feel that you need, will result in a pinnacle moment that will delight your audience and honoured guest(s) - one they will be talking about long after, and that will be sure to exceed your expectations.

Charity Functions

My work for charities, non-profits and community associations is extensive, and follows the same content as for business functions, only with different fee considerations.

For organizations in Caledon, I consider most of these events to be covered under my official appointment by the Town of Caledon, and there is no appearance or proclamation charge.  Outside that jurisdiction, a fee may or may not be applicable, on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the event particulars, nature of the organization, travel expenses, etc.

Regardless of whether there's a fee or not, all work is still held to the highest possible standard.

Civic Functions

The role of Town Crier is primarily a civic office, and the proclamation work that I do generally follows the same model as for business functions.  However, civic duties may also include public roles such as moderating all-candidate debates, where an autoritative but impartial personality is required.  As a professional facilitator, I am uniquely suited and highly-skilled in the performance of such functions.

For civic functions within Caledon or other municipalities where I hold a formal appointment, I consider most events to be covered under my official duties, and all appearance and proclamation fees are waived.  Outside those jurisdictions, a fee may or may not be applicable, on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the event particulars, nature of the function to be performed, travel expenses, etc.

PROCLAMATION FEE RANGE:    Free to $300  (HST, travel, and other services may be additional)

ADDITIONAL SERVICES AVAILABLE INCLUDE:
  • Master of Ceremonies
  • Presiding at unveilings and inductions
  • Moderating all-candidate debates
  • Facilitating townhall gatherings
  • Representing my community elsewhere

Parades

One particular traditional role of Town Criers is the leading of parades.  This is not an honorary position; instead it is purely functional.  The Town Crier's job is always to capture people's attention, gather their focus, and let them know that what is about to follow is important.

If done well, leading a parade is actually a lot of work.  My style is to interact with a very large number of attendees, preparing them for what's to come and engaging them to make the parade a more personal experience.  I also like to emphasize their role in cheering on the parade participants, many of whom have put a lot of effort into creating their own piece of the spectacle.  At regular points along the route, I will do frequent proclamations, reminding all of the onlookers of who organized the event and what it's in celebration of.  Finally, it is my job to set the pace and try to keep the parade components together and spaced consistently - not an easy challenge from the very front!

I classify parade engagements as any one of charity functions, civic functions, or business functions, depending on the circumstances.  Since they typically involve less customized writing, the fees are generally lower.
